When I was young, my desire and aim were just as self-evident: to be a professional footballer. The sport appealed to me — the training intensity, the playing integrity, and the undeniable fact that the success relies on the strength and unity of the whole team. These values suited both my personality and values. However, as circumstances unfolded and my own horizons widened, I found myself discovering an alternative that combined my desire for a stimulating and rewarding existence with my enduring love of my homeland, the Maldives.
Much to the relief of my parents (and possibly the Premier League's silent acceptance of the defeat), I channeled my younger energy into the hospitality industry, an industry which, like football, operates on teamwork, hard work, and a sense of excellence. In the last twenty years, I have had the privilege to work with some of the most experienced hoteliers in the industry, both within the Maldives and abroad. These experiences have served to widen my knowledge of the hospitality sector as well as aid me in developing my leadership skills — key tools in an ever-changing and guest-focused environment.
My 20 years of professional life have provided me with a wide range of experiences in managing the delicate balance of guest expectations and creating a high-performance, motivated workforce. What makes me ahead of the curve in this highly competitive business is a collection of behaviors and attitudes: thinking very fast and realigning in response to changing circumstances, absolute support to colleagues, and uninterrupted focus on measurable results, and rapid problem-solving capabilities to get problems resolved efficiently and innovatively.
I find great personal satisfaction in using my experience and good attitude to create lasting relationships with guests and stakeholders alike. To be able to see firsthand how operational improvements lead directly to better guest experiences is very rewarding. Perhaps just as rewarding is the opportunity to motivate and inspire my team — to push them to do better than they ever thought possible, grow professionally, and appreciate the hospitality business. I feel privileged to have contributed towards developing the future leaders in hospitality who will continue to transform the Maldives into a world destination.
This has not been a career development experience; it has been a continuous exercise of passion, leadership, and a constant pursuit for excellence at one of the world's most beautiful destinations.
